Annerley Building & Interior Design – The Sunbeam Shop

This iconic Annerley property, known locally as the Sunbeam Shop, presented a unique challenge. The heritage-listed façade and proximity to a train line imposed strict planning and acoustic controls. Therefore, our design approach focused on transforming the interiors while preserving the character of the original shopfront. Working in a builder-led design collaboration with JDL Construction, we developed a solution that respected heritage requirements and delivered a functional, modern family home.

Building Design

The original layout was awkward, shaped by a triangular block and decades of ad-hoc alterations. In response, we reconfigured the home from three bedrooms and one bathroom into a four-bedroom, two-bathroom layout, all within the existing footprint. Moreover, we opened the plan to connect living spaces with private outdoor areas while minimising changes to the heritage façade and avoiding acoustic impact. The design retained the shopfront’s historic charm, applying only maintenance and a refreshed colour scheme externally. As a result, the property still looks like the beloved Sunbeam Shop from the street, while inside it offers a completely new experience.

Interior Design

The interiors celebrate personality and heritage with a modern twist. Notably the client’s love of green inspired a bold colour palette, paired with Dulux natural white for warmth and balance. In addition, bespoke cabinetry including a built-in bookcase, and a spacious open-plan kitchen and dining zone connecting to the outdoors. The generous kitchen features custom joinery and a walk-through laundry. While the main bathroom includes a freestanding bathtub and spacious shower. In addition, the original rear sunroom was rebuilt and insulated for year-round comfort. Additionally the old kitchen became a master suite with a walk-in robe and ensuite, cleverly using the property’s unique angles.
